How hot should you set your water heater?
Water heaters are factory set at OSHA recommended levels, around 140 degrees. On the other hand, the EPA suggests turning the thermostat down to 120 to reduce power consumption, and a booster heater to reach sanitizing temperatures at select outlets.
From another point of view, lower temperatures are better for households with small children, while higher temperatures are more efficient at cleaning and sanitizing.

Best Way To Remove a Sink Trap
Before you remove a sink trap, give the drain a few plunges with a toilet plunger. This will push most of the water out of the trap, lessening the mess when you pull the trap. If you have a double sink, be sure to plug the other drain to contain the air pressure. If the strainer isn’t a screw-down style, you’ll have to hold it down while you plunge the drain.
Should I be using pipe dope or thread tape?
Thread sealing compound, commonly known as “pipe dope,” can drip and smear. For most DIY projects involving pipe threads around the house, thread tape will work just as well or better. You can buy a multi-purpose tape, which is usually white. Thicker tape is usually yellow for gas or pink for water. Try one of the thicker options for easier handling.
When you wrap the tape, roll it counterclockwise around the threads. Can’t get the roll into a tight space? Wrap a few turns of tape around a cheap pen and apply from that. You’ll want to wrap your tape around the pipe threads roughly three times for best results.
